July deadline for proposed CFP

A reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is still on track to be delivered in 2012, European Union Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki told the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries on Monday.

In fact, a proposed CFP is due to be adopted when commissioners meet on 13 July, said Damanaki. From there, the proposed CFP will go to Parliament.

Damanaki called delivery of a reformed CFP “the main priority” for 2012.

“I will make sure the commission’s proposal pivot around sustainability, conservation, decentralized decision making and industry empowerment,” she said. “We have all recognized — and I have had your support in building this foundation — that we have no choice but to radically change our production and consumption patterns if we want to keep our seas in good shape for future generations. This is a radical shift and one with which I am happy to be associated, as I hope are you.”
