NOAA Provides Grant for Seafood Cook Off

The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board will receive a $600,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to help fund the Great American Seafood Cook Off. New Orleans will host the fifth consecutive event Aug. 2 to 3 during the Louisiana Foodservice Expo and the Gulf Coast Seafood Pavilion at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The grant will cover the cost of the event for several years.

"We are thrilled to receive this grant," says Ewell Smith, executive director of the cook off. "It enables the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana to host this national event, which puts the spotlight on local, domestic seafood. An event like this showcases how important it is to buy local, domestic seafood in the various markets across the country."

The Great American Seafood Cook Off aids efforts to improve awareness and involvement in the domestic seafood industry. The contest is limited to 20 premier chefs and the primary criterion is that the seafood be harvested exclusively in U.S. waters.
