North American seafood suppliers report: 2006-10

Over the past five years, North American seafood suppliers have seen it all.

Since reaching a record 16.6 pounds in 2004, U.S. per-capita seafood consumption has faltered, hitting a seven-year low of 15.8 pounds in 2010. The food conglomerates that jumped into the seafood business in the 1990s are all but gone, replaced by more foreign-owned seafood companies expanding their presence in North America. The global economic downturn that took hold in late 2008 forced consumers to dine out less frequently or spend less money when they do. Commodity and fuel costs exploded in 2007 and early 2008, only to drop when the economic downturn hit, and now they’re increasing again. Margins are getting tighter by the day, as North American suppliers deal with a weak dollar and growing competition from Asia and Europe for available product.

These days, the landscape is still changing, as value-added offerings and perceived bargains drive seafood sales in a slowly recovering economy.

Assembled by SeaFood Business, this report offers an analysis of North America’s leading seafood suppliers, including year-over-year lists of their sales figures over the past five years, as well as a look at the trends impacting the North American seafood market.
