The exports of fish and fishery products touched a record growth of 15.68 per cent to USD 367.472 million in fiscal year of 2013-14, beating the target set by the Marine Fisheries Department (MFD), its director general said on Friday.
Sharing the latest data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Shaukat Hussain, director general of MGD, said his department’s exports have increased by 12.25 per cent (in quantity) in the financial year 2013-14 whereas, last year, it was valued at USD 317.652 million (quantity 138,680 metric tons). They had set a target of USD 367.472 million for the year 2013-14.
The MGD director general said that the upsurge in exports was the result of the government’s successful efforts to curb the smuggling of freshwater fish to Afghanistan and the commencement of legal exports to the country from November 2013.
