Pesce Azzurro anchovies get FoS certification

Italian canned seafood company Pesce Azzurro Cefalù has received Friend of the Sea certification for its anchovy products.

The company’s anchovies are caught by artisanal fisheries in the Mediterranean Sea. There is no impact on the seabed, Friend of the Sea noted in a statement, because the fishermen use large, powerful torches that attract the anchovies to the surface where they are caught in purse seine nets. The fisheries do not operate during the winter to accommodate the anchovy breeding season. Friend of the Sea also approved of Pesce Azzurro Cefalù’s chain of custody.

“The Italian consumers are more and more demanding for sustainability and Pesce Azzurro Cefalù’s own company policy has always given highest relevance to environmental conservation and marine habitat conservation,” said Pesce Azzurro Cefalù’s Filippa Paternò.
