Supermarket chain Safeway is continuing in its mission to open small-format stores in North America.
The company plans to convert a former Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market in San Jose, Calif. that it had previously acquired into one of these small-format operations; Safeway plans to remodel the 23,200-square foot vacant storefront this coming spring, with a grand opening expected by summer 2016.
New-store development for the chain has been aimed at these “areas of opportunity,” meaning stores sized “anywhere from 20,000 square feet to 75,000 square feet,” a Safeway spokesperson told Supermarket News.
The San Jose developing location will be a full-service Safeway, complete with local and fresh packaged goods, including seafood.
A division of Albertsons, Safeway will have four storefronts in California once its latest addition is finished.
