Salmon sales buoy UK 2013 food exports

A 38 percent rise in salmon sales helped U.K. food and drink exports in 2013 grow after a flat 2012.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) said total U.K. food and non-alcoholic drink exports grew by 5 percent, thanks largely to salmon exports, which accounted for GBP 465 million (USD 767 million, EUR 556 million) of the total GBP 12.8 billion (USD 21.1 billion, EUR 15.3 billion).

Fresh salmon exports to the U.S. grew GBP 43 million (USD 71 million, EUR 51.4 million) to GBP 199 million (USD 328 million, EUR 238 million) while fresh salmon exports to China were up GBP 23 million (USD 37.9 million, EUR 27.5 million) to GBP 50 million (USD 82.5 million, EUR 59.8 million).

Overall fish and seafood exports were up 8 percent to GBP 1.46 billion (USD 2.4 billion, EUR 1.8 billion).
