Seafood import trade ban extended

Seafood exporters wanting to get back into Russia had their hopes dashed this week, as the trade ban on food imports from Western countries received an extension for a year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this week that he was extending the ban on food imports, including seafood, from the United States, the EU, Australia, Canada and Norway, according to a report from Reuters.

Putin first put the ban in place last summer, in retaliation for economic sanctions by the west related to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and involvement in destabilization of Ukraine.

The EU extended its sanctions this week prior to Putin’s announcement.
