Harbor Seafood Founder Peter Cardone passed away on 21 August at the age of 76.

The seafood industry is mourning the death of Harbor Seafood Founder Peter Cardone, who passed away on 21 August at the age of 76.

Cardone began his career as a chef in New York City, and went on to found Harbor Seafood in 1975 as a general food brokerage. Under Cardone’s guidance, the company became an international seafood importer and exporter.

Cardone was also a former chairman and former president of the National Fisheries Institute, the premier trade group for the U.S. seafood industry. He was renowned for his charitable work.

“With the passing, on 21 August, of Harbor Seafood founder Peter Cardone, the seafood community has lost a pioneer, a leader, and a truly charitable soul,” NFI President John Connelly said. “Pete ... built his vision into a company that sources globally and continues to innovate. He did so while helping others and an industry that he loved. Few NFI members could resist the ‘Cardone Call,’ when he would telephone asking they support a charitable cause.”

Cardone was a recipient of the NFI Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry through his business ventures and charitable activity.

"Those of you that knew Pete understood he was the kind of person who had no agenda, no ulterior motive, and no self-interest,” Harbor Seafood said in a statement. “He took pleasure in helping all of us to grow and succeed, while never seeking praise or anything in return. He was honest, reliable, and dedicated to making other people’s lives truly better.  He embodied the true spirit of giving and was known for supporting numerous charitable organizations, such as the March of Dimes and the Joe Namath Foundation. Pete is truly irreplaceable and will be missed dearly.”

The company added that due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no formal memorial service.

“However, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church 215-35 38th Ave, Bayside, New York, 11361, in memory of Peter Cardone,” the company said.
