Number 1: Argos Georgia sinks in South Atlantic, fate of 27 crew unknown
The most-read story on SeafoodSource in 2024 was published in June and related to the unfortunate fate of the F/V Argos Georgia.
The vessel reportedly sprang a leak in heavy seas on 22 July, and the crew was forced to abandon ship. The event occurred during heavy seas with 35 knot winds and waves of up to 8 meters.
After rescue operations, the Falklands Maritime Authority confirmed that 14 crew were rescued by 24 June, while four remained missing and nine were confirmed dead. Despite the rescue efforts the authority later confirmed the other 13 crew members perished in the disaster.
The U.K. Government later issued a report identifying issues with the vessel’s side shell door caused the disaster, and it cautioned other owners of fishing vessels to assess the doors to ensure they can close fully.
