Walmart: New fish launch is working

It’s been less than two months since Walmart reached out to Norwegian seafood producer Marine Harvest to step up its fresh salmon offerings, and so far the new rollout has been a big hit.

“We’re hearing great things from our customers,” John Ales, Walmart’s director of communications, told SeafoodSource.

Walmart first introduced the fish in May in approximately 4,000 stores nationwide. Species include salmon, tilapia, halibut and rainbow trout, produced by Marine Harvest’s United States division. All of it, Ales said, is fresh, never frozen.

This is not the first time Walmart has offered fresh fish to its customers, nor is Marine Harvest the only supplier, but Ales said the new move in May was a ramping up of the company’s offerings. Ales said Walmart was moved in part by feedback from buyers seeking fresh fish.

“We’re always listening to our customers to understand the items they’re looking for,” he said.
