Marine Harvest Canada, which operates 37 Atlantic salmon grow-out sites in British Columbia, is urging the provincial government to develop closed-containment fish farm projects.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors, free breeding has significantly increased the country's catfish output, causing a supply surplus resulting in low prices for farmers.

VASEP suggested the catfish output be adjusted to better match demand and spur an increase in prices.

The Mekong Delta region, home to 84 catfish processing factories, has yielded more than 1.2 million tons of catfish so far this year.

New health regulations for Louisiana oysters went into effect last Friday requiring harvesters to refrigerate their oysters within 5 hours of harvest once water temperatures exceed 81 degrees F.

If not refrigerated within 5 hours, the regulations, adopted by the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference last year, require harvesters to tag their oysters as, "For Cooking or Post-harvest Processing Only."

Dongwon Group cancelled a press conference in Seoul, South Korea, today announcing its acquisition of the StarKist canned tuna brand from Del Monte Foods Co. of San Francisco.

The press conference was delayed due to "some differences between the two sides," a Dongwon official told the Asia Pulse news wire, declining to elaborate.

The official did not tell Asia Pulse when Dongwon will announce the deal.
