Amazon slashes prices at Whole Foods – again

Despite raising prices on many items last year, Amazon and Whole Foods Market are lowering prices on numerous products, including some seafood items - again.

WFM will roll out its third round of price cuts on hundreds of items on 3 April and Amazon is offering expanded Prime benefits with more exclusive weekly deals on popular products across departments.

While Amazon immediately began lowering prices at WFM stores after its acquisition of the natural grocery chain, WFM raised prices on more than 600 items, The Wall Street Journal reported in December.

While a primary focus of the new price cuts is fresh produce, WFM is also reducing the price on some seafood and meat items. For example, the price on fresh, sustainable wild-caught halibut fillets has been slashed by around 35 percent to USD 16.99 (EUR 15.18) per pound for Amazon Prime members this week, WFM and Amazon said in a statement.

“Whole Foods Market continues to maintain the high quality standards that we’ve championed for nearly 40 years and, with Amazon, we will lower more prices in the future, building on the positive momentum from previous price investments,” said John Mackey, co-founder and CEO of WFM. “The standards for how our products are sourced, grown and produced are powerful and set Whole Foods Market apart from the competition. We will continue to focus on both lowering prices and bringing customers the quality they trust and the innovative assortment they expect from our brand.”
