Ecuador: March 2018 shrimp sourcing update

Shrimp aquaculture in Ecuador is concentrated in four areas: Guayas (138,000 hectares), El Oro (40,000 hectares), Manabí (18,500 hectares), and Esmeraldas (15,000 hectares). Guayas and El Oro are located close to the Peruvian border and around the city of Guayaquil. The industry in this area is dominated by large-scale producers such as Omarsa, Songa, and Santa Priscilla. In Manabí and Esmeraldas, farms are often owned and operated by smaller producers selling to smaller exporters with facilities close
to their farms. The supply chains in these areas are slightly more fragmented, but much less than those of many Asian competitors.
