Some 251,000 metric tons (MT) of fisheries and aquaculture products worth a total NOK 9.9 billion (USD 1.2 billion, EUR 1 billion) were exported by Norway last month. While this volume was 12 percent lower than in October 2017, the value was 10 percent or NOK 884 million (USD 105.7 million, EUR 92.7 million) higher.
Throughout the first 10 months of this year, Norwegian exporters have sold 2.2 million MT of products with a value of NOK 80.7 billion (USD 9.6 billion, EUR 8.5 billion), representing a year-on-year increase in volume of six percent, and a four percent, or NOK 3.2 billion (USD 382.4 million, EUR 335.5 million), rise in value.
“This is the best export month for Norwegian seafood ever,” said Renate Larsen, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). “An export value of almost NOK 10 billion is a fantastic milestone, and clearly shows how important Norwegian seafood industry is both globally and nationally.”
Larsen also highlighted that October was a “historic” month for Norwegian salmon, setting new volume and value records with 104,000 MT of products worth NOK 6.5 billion (USD 776.7 million, EUR 681.5 million) being exported.
Compared against October last year, this volume was up eight percent, while the value was 15 percent or NOK 827 million (USD 98.8 million, EUR 86.7 million) higher.
The average price for whole fresh salmon last month was NOK 58.39 (USD 6.98, EUR 6.12) per kilogram against NOK 54.50 (USD 6.51, EUR 5.71) in October last year.
So far this year, Norway has exported 862,000 MT of salmon for NOK 55.8 billion (USD 6.7 billion, EUR 5.8 billion), representing year-on-year volume and value growths of seven percent and five percent, respectively.
The country also exported 4,700 MT of trout for NOK 293 million (USD 35 million, EUR 30.7 million) last month, up 24 percent and 21 percent, respectively. So far this year, it has exported 36,000 MT of trout for NOK 2.4 billion (USD 286.8 million, EUR 251.6 million), which represents a volume increase of 22 percent and a value increase of six percent from the same period of last year.
To date, Norway has also exported 59,000 MT of fresh cod products worth NOK 2.1 billion (USD 250.9 million, EUR 220.2 million). While this volume represents a decrease of five percent year-on-year, the value is up by two percent, or NOK 49 million (USD 5.9 million, EUR 5.1 million), from the same period of last year.
It has also exported 57,000 MT of frozen cod, again worth NOK 2.1 billion, with the volume and value decreasing by 15 percent and two percent, respectively.
In the pelagic sector, 216,000 MT of herring worth NOK 1.9 billion (USD 227 million, EUR 199.2 million) and 162,000 MT of mackerel valued at NOK 2.4 billion have been shipped over the 10-month period.
At the same time, Norwegian shellfish exporters have sold 1,700 MT of king crab valued at NOK 490 million (USD 58.5 million, EUR 51.4 million) and 9,000 MT of shrimp worth NOK 686 million (USD 82 million, EUR 71.9 million).
