Vietnamese shrimp prices rise

Farm gate prices of shrimp coming out of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta increased by VND 15,000 (USD 0.67, EUR 0.59) to VND 20,000 (USD 0.89, EUR 0.78) per kg over the course of the first-quarter of 2016.

At the start of April, the average price of whiteleg shrimp (sized 100 pcs/kg) had reached VND 95,000 (USD 4.24, EUR 3.72) to VND 115,000 (USD 5.13, EUR 4.50) per kg. Meanwhile, the price of black tiger shrimp (30 pcs/kg) was VND 240,000 (USD 10.70, EUR 9.39) to VND 280,000 (USD 12.48, EUR 11.02) per kg.

Last year, the Mekong Delta, which is Vietnam’s main shrimp production region, produced an estimated 344,600 metric tons (MT) of whiteleg shrimp and 255,873 MT of black tigers.

The Southeast Asian country’s shrimp exports totaled USD 3 billion (EUR 2.6 billion), down 25.3 percent. Its top three markets were the United States, Japan and the EU, together accounting for 60 percent of the total export value.
