This year’s most popular commentary detailed the ins-and-outs of the algae bloom crisis that swept Chile’s salmon sector during the first quarter of 2016.

The comprehensive SeafoodSource commentary package discusses the companies hit hardest by the event, including AquaChile, Australis Mar, Blumar, Camanchaca, Cermaq, Australis Mar, Salmones Humboldt, Marine Farm, Marine Harvest Chile, Multiexport Foods and Ventisqueros. Moreover, it tackles the tone surrounding the entire ordeal.

“Everybody’s nervous,” said John Lüer, export manager for Agrosuper, a Chilean seafood production, distribution and commercialization firm. “It’s not something than can be predicted or managed. The next two to three weeks will be decisive to see if there’s an even bigger impact, but right now we’re all crossing our fingers and knocking wood.”

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the value of exported pangasius from Vietnam was still plummeting at the start of the year. In January, it was projected that exports would earn USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.4 billion) in 2016, a drop of 5 percent compared with 2015.

“The reasons for the expected fall include: the anti-dumping tariffs imposed in the USA; the US catfish monitoring program – pangasius is a catfish species; and competition from other whitefish species. (Although a freshwater fish, pangasius competes in the market for marine white fish species.),” said SeafoodSource Contributing Editor Mike Urch in this commentary.

Urch continued: “To recover from this decline, the domestic pangasius industry should seek to sell in more export markets and increase its share in existing export markets, the association said.”
