Asda ‘looking into’ supplier sea lice allegations

In an email to SeafoodSource, UK retailer Asda said it is looking into allegations that its salmon supplier Wester Ross Fisheries has an “appalling sea lice record.”

Last week, the Salmon and Trout Association (S&TA) of Scotland said a sea lice report showed adult sea lice numbers were way over the industry’s threshold for three months. S&TA also said Wester Ross Fisheries has a long record of poor sea lice control.

“We take our responsibility on sourcing seriously and we are looking into this,” Asda said. “We would never switch off a supplier straight away, as you will appreciate this wouldn’t be the right thing to do and we need to look into this properly. We have spoken to our Sustainable Business Director who is in talks with the supplier and also raised that any evidence of poor management of salmon should be submitted to the statutory authorities.”
