Breakthrough for Middle East sturgeon farm

About 140 metric tons of live sturgeon is being transported from Europe to the United Arab Emirates by air and sea via a new, complex delivery system designed by United Food Technologies AG.

The company, which specializes in aquaculture technology and logistics, on Thursday said the system allows it to transport older, larger fish alive to avoid waiting for sturgeon to grow out over a four- to four-and-half-year period. This will also allow the company to produce its first batch of premium caviar by the end of 2011.

The facility, which is located in Abu Dhabi, is billed as the world’s largest recirculating aquaculture system for sturgeons and the first plant of its kind in the Middle East. It has a capacity of 32 metric tons of caviar per year and an annual production of 490 metric tons of sturgeon.

United Food Technologies AG is part of United Food Technologies International, a German-Arabic joint venture based in Beirut, Lebanon.
