GAA spreads the word on responsible aquaculture

The Global Aquaculture Alliance on Tuesday launched a web page and newsletter to spread the word about the Best Aquaculture Practices program. The new information, "GAA Weighing In," can be found on GAA’s existing website’s, under the “newsroom” tab.

“The idea is to spotlight people and businesses that bring responsible aquaculture to life, as well as success stories that make the BAP program a world-leading certification scheme,” said Steve Hedlund, GAA communications manager. “The GAA has always done a good job of telling the world about our accomplishments in the first half of the supply chain but not so much the latter half. The idea [with the new webpage] is really to do a better job showing results in the marketplace.”

Hedlund said the web page is really about advancing responsible aquaculture, adding that the industry needs to be more proactive about getting the word out about responsible aquaculture, via press releases and by keeping tabs on consumer and trade press.

In addition, the organization’s new biweekly newsletter, GAA Update, will go out every other Tuesday at 9 a.m. (EST). The newsletter will be an accumulation of all communication that the GAA is involved in including feature stories and news about BAP program, including GOAL 2012 and news from the GAA Advocate.

“It’s a vehicle to deliver all GAA news,” said Hedlund. “The newsletter is a piece of the puzzle to bring together all aspects of communication. We need to be proactive and more reactive. When there is bad press out there we need to do a better job of getting the word out there about the difference we’re making. We need to talk about all the good things and react to anything in consumer press and raise awareness of the BAP program. The GAA is well-established and the time is perfect to be more aggressive about getting the good word out.”
