IWG-A releases guide for shellfish aquaculture

The Interagency Working Group on Aquaculture (IWG-A) announced it’s releasing a new guide to help navigate the shellfish aquaculture permit process in the United States.

The guide, called Information for Shellfish Growers, gives shellfish farmers material regarding types of leases, permits and other forms of authorization needed for a commercial shellfish farm. It also includes links to additional information and contacts who can aid growers in identifying the specific requirements for their state or region.

The National Shellfish Initiative was established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2011. The National Ocean Policy Plan was designed to help increase shellfish populations in US waters through commercial aquaculture production and restoration efforts.

Other priorities include improved coordination among federal, state and local agencies and clarifying the permitting process for shellfish growers. The guide was created by the IWG-A Regulatory Task force in response to the needs of the shellfish industry and to help address the outlined priorities.
