The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has awarded Best Aquaculture Practices certification to four farms operated by Skuna Bay Salmon the company announced on Monday.
The farms join four other Skuna Bay sites that achieved BAP certification earlier this year. The company has also committed to certifying additional farms so that all future Skuna Bay salmon is raised and harvested from certified farms.
Skuna Bay markets its a line of premium salmon, which debuted late last year, as “craft raised.” The salmon are farmed in Nookta Bay, located near Skuna Bay off the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
The GAA’s review process involved an audit of Skuna Bay’s social responsibility, food safety, animal welfare and traceability processes and systems and a visit to its farms. In June, the BAP certification standards for salmon farms were completed after a process that lasted more than two years.
“Skuna Bay’s commitment to certify all their salmon farms to the prestigious BAP standards demonstrates their leadership in responsible aquaculture and assures the confidence of the marketplace,” said GAA President George Chamberlain. “This full certification will encourage and inspire aquaculturists around the world to seek this global standard of excellence.”
