Mowi records increased Q1 2025 harvest; SalMar volumes down as part of plans to build biomass

Bergen, Norway-headquartered salmon-farming firm Mowi harvested around 108,000 metric tons (MT) of gutted weight (GWT) farmed salmon in the first quarter of this year, which was 11,500 MT more than in the corresponding period of 2024 and matched the producer’s previous guidance.

According to the group’s latest trading update, in Q1 2025, its Farming Norway division harvested 62,000 MT (up from 55,000 MT in Q1 2024), Farming Scotland harvested 17,500 MT (up from 14,500 MT), Farming Chile harvested 14,000 MT (up from 12,500 MT), Farming Canada harvested 5,000 MT (down from 8,500 MT), Farming Faroes harvested 4,000 MT (up from 2,500 MT), Farming Iceland – also referred to as Arctic Fish – harvested 3,000 MT (up from 2,500 MT), and Farming Ireland harvested 2,500 MT (up from 1,000 MT).

The update estimated the group’s operational EBIT to be approximately EUR 214 million (USD 243.7 million) for the quarter, representing an increase of around EUR 13 million (USD 14.8 million) compared to the corresponding period of 2024 when the company achieved an EBIT of EUR 201 million (USD 228.9 million).

The Q1 2025 operational EBIT recorded for Mowi’s Consumer Products segment was around EUR 33 million (USD 37.6 million), which was EUR 9 million (USD 10.2 million) more than in the same period of 2024. Its operational EBITDA for its Feed business was EUR 7 million (USD 8 million), which was up EUR 1 million (USD 1.1 million) on the previous year.

Meanwhile, Frøya, Norway-headquartered producer SalMar harvested 42,700 GWT of salmon in the opening quarter of this year, representing a drop of 10,200 GWT compared with the harvest reported in the same period a year previously.

This latest volume total comprised 21,100 GWT from its Farming Central Norway segment, 19,300 GWT from Farming Northern Norway, 1,200 GWT from SalMar Ocean, and 1,100 MT from Icelandic Salmon. In the corresponding period of last year, Farming Central Norway recorded 27,800 GWT, Farming Northern Norway harvested 17,500 GWT, SalMar Aker Ocean produced 4,800 GWT, and Icelandic Salmon harvested 2,800 GWT.

The company’s latest trading update reiterated its February advisory that the focus in Q1 has been on building biomass. Therefore, most of the volume recorded was harvested late in the quarter.
