New Hope launches two new ‘health’ feed products for Chinese aquaculture market

Rising temperatures mean Chinese aquaculture farmers are spending more on more specialized, disease-resistant feeds, according to the boss of the Guangdong arm of leading agriculture conglomerate New Hope.

The firm has launched two new feed products that aim to reduce liver disease in fish as well as a protein-rich gut feed, according to Yang Wen Xue, speaking at a public sales event where the company took orders from trade buyers.

“Hotter summers in southern China mean more liver problems, which reduce fish growth rate and size,” Yang said.

Footage from the sales event showed New Hope staff stacking bales of cash in plastic bags: publicly taking vast sums of cash has become a promotion technique for companies in China keen to spur demand for products.

Separately, a falling dollar relative to the yuan is encouraging Chinese importers to import more fishmeal. The dollar is trading at CNY 6.79 as of June 6 – the highest level since November – and this has reduced the price importers pay for Peruvian fishmeal from CNY 10,027 to CNY 9,944 (USD 1,468 to 1,455, EUR 1,320 to 1,300) per ton, according to Chinese feed sources.
