Russian Aquaculture Group makes play for Chinese salmon market

One of Russia’s leading producers of salmon is making a big play for the Chinese market.

The Russian Aquaculture Group has been thoroughly researching the Chinese market for Atlantic and pink salmon, and is currently seeking its first exports to China, according to a company statement for this year’s China seafood expo.

Russian Aquaculture claims to have produced 8,400 tons in the first half of 2017, worth USD 5.5 million (EUR 4.7 million) – up 90 percent in terms of value year-on-year. The company, which has depended heavily on imports of Norwegian technology, has in recent years ambitiously expanded its aquaculture sites. Russia has long been China’s top supplier of seafood, in large part due to supplies of product for export-minded Chinese processors. The latest drive by Russian Aquaculture Group, however, signals a shift in focus to the Chinese domestic consumer market.

The company has plans to exhibit at seafood shows in Shanghai and Qingdao this year.
