Tilapia farm in Brazil opens new processing plant, receives BAP certification

GeneSeas Aquacultura has become the first aquaculture company in Brazil to obtain Best Aquaculture Practices certification by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.

GeneSeas’ farm and production plant in São Paulo, Brazil, received full BAP certification on 12 September.

“We are honored to be the first company in Brazil to receive such an important certification that assures GeneSeas’ commitment with the best global practices in aquaculture and the development of the region where we are located, the most important tilapia producers in Brazil,” GeneSeas Aquacultura CEO Breno Davis said. “This achievement perfectly aligns with GeneSeas’ vision to provide their customers with the highest quality product while maintaining a dedicated commitment to environmental sustainability.”

GeneSeas was founded in 2001 and produces eight tons of tilapia per year, grown in a low-density suspended cage system located along the Paraná River, near the western edge of São Paulo, Brazil. The company exports much of its tilapia to the United States via Rutland, Vermont, U.S.A.-based Tropical Aquaculture.

GeneSeas employs more than 300 workers and also owns its feed company, ensuring “sustainable, responsible farming practices throughout every aspect of…operations,” the company said.

Earlier this year, GeneSeas opened a new processing plant located nearby its farm, enabling the company to process, pack and ship its fish within 60 minutes of harvest. It also has incorporated a live-transfer process into its harvesting operations.

In its press release, GeneSeas said its focus is now on obtaining three-star BAP certification for its hatchery.
