Canada’s Coastal Nation Fisheries names Guy Dean CEO; Waitrose appoints Sarah Hussey as new fisheries, aquaculture manager

– Coastal Nations Fisheries (CNF), a British Columbia, Canada-based fishing company co-owned by eight First Nations groupd, has appointed Guy Dean as CEO, after having served as interim CEO of the company since July 2024 .

In a release about the appointment, the company said that the appointment came after a lengthy external search. 

“We are confident that with Guy’s humble leadership, we will continue to accomplish great things for the company, its eight shareholder Nations, and their citizens," Board Chair K’unya Laurie Bevan said.

Coastal Nations Fisheries was a product of the 2021 Fisheries Resources Reconciliation Agreement, which brought the Canadian government and First Nations governments together in cooperation. It is collaboratively owned by the Gitga’at, Gitxaała, Haida, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo Xai’xais, Metlakatla, Nuxalk, and Wuikinuxv Nations. 

Dean brings three decades of experience to the role. He was awarded the 2018 “Seafood Champion Award for Leadership” by the Ocean Foundation, has served on the board of Ocean Wise, and is currently an expert advisor for the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, as well as other conservation organizations. 

“In the short period since our inception, Coastal Nations Fisheries has made enormous progress toward fulfilling our mission of creating a thriving boat-to-table, Indigenous-owned, and sustainably operated commercial fishing company," Dean said. "I look forward to continuing to push this company forward and am humbled by the board’s belief in my leadership.”

– U.K.-based supermarket chain Waitrose has named Sarah Hussey as the brand’s new fisheries and aquaculture manager. 

Hussey spent more than seven years at food and beverage manufacturing firm Seafresh Group, first as a biologist and then as the firm's seafood responsible sourcing manager. She also served as fisheries and freshwater business manager at Thomson Ecology before Seafresh.

The company also made two additions to its seafood sustainability team recently, bringing on Ben Lambden as manager for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries and Katie Keay as senior aquaculture and fisheries manager. 

In February, Waitrose committed to adopting humane electrical stunning prawn harvest methods, pledging to phase out ice-slurry harvesting by the end of 2026.
