The Sushi Council of the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) has announced that Hissho Sushi, a large U.S. sushi distributor, will join the council.
The Sushi Council, founded in early 2024, is a pre-competitive organization which allows sushi industry stakeholders to work together to enhance product integrity and promote industry-led food safety.
Council Chairman Michael McNicholas, who is also the CEO of Culimer USA, said that Hissho’s “inclusion into the NFI Sushi Council is a major step forward for our organization."
"With a company of their volume and influence in our corner, the Sushi Council’s role as a unified voice for the industry strengthens and amplifies,” he said.
Hissho Sushi distributes more than 125,000 pounds of responsibly sourced seafood weekly to over 2,600 American retailers, including grocery stores, airports, universities, and hospitals. The company is currently in the midst of a headquarters move from Charlotte, North Carolina to York County, South Carolina.
Hissho Vice President of Food Safety and Compliance Rupesh Modi said that Hissho joined the Council because its mission aligns with that of the NFI Sushi Council.
“Responsible sourcing is more than a business practice; it’s a responsibility we take seriously at Hissho Sushi,” Modi said.
