Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-based aquatic technology company Innovasea and Bergen, Norway-based salmon producer Mowi have announced a partnership that will make Innovasea the preferred vendor of environmental monitoring equipment and software at all Mowi sites.
The agreement extends and expands an existing partnership between the two firms, which has seen Innovasea providing environmental monitoring systems for several Mowi sites in the past.
“Innovasea's renewed partnership with Mowi is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in aquaculture," Innovasea Vice President Tim Stone told SeafoodSource. "Our global team, with experts located in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Chile, and Greece, allows us to offer hands-on training and guidance tailored to each region's unique challenges. This approach allows us to understand local conditions and provide tailored solutions for monitoring and improving environmental conditions on their farm sites.”
Innovasea’s technology tracks environmental factors in real time, sending data on oxygen levels, salinity, and temperature, among other measures, to a central cloud-based platform called Realfish Pro, which allows farmers to quickly track conditions across multiple sites. This allows operators and managers to quickly access data to optimize feeding, protect their fish, and make strategic decisions even when they cannot be at their sites.
"In today’s landscape, you must constantly innovate to counter environmental and operational challenges," Mowi Group IT Manager of Feed and Farming Arnt Mjøen said. "Innovasea has made it effortless to receive, analyze, and act on our data – whether on the Realfish Pro platform or contextualized within our MowiInsight analytical platform for improved daily operations and fish growth.”
The partnership is expected to help Mowi gain insights not only about each farming site but about individual salmon pens that will allow it to make strategic decisions for these hyper-targeted environments.
“Since working with Innovasea, we’ve learned a great deal about our site and pen conditions,” Mowi Group Manager for Seawater Production Technology Henrik Trengereid said. “Continuous information about the living environment for our fish is important to ensure we maintain good control of fish welfare. It also enables us to make swift and informed actions while giving us valuable information to improve our sites and operation over time.”
Mowi is currently the largest producer of farm-raised Atlantic salmon in the world, with an estimated harvest in 2024 of 500,000 metric tons from sites in Norway, Scotland, Ireland, the Faroes, Iceland, Canada, and Chile.
