Taunton, Mass., seafood distributor AGAR is celebrating the official debut of its private-label seafood brand, Nautifish Seafood, with a USD 1,608.01 (EUR 1,163.41) donation to Ocean Alliance.
The Nautifish line was launched in January to provide sustainable seafood products to New England restaurants and retailers. AGAR will donate a penny for every pound of Nautifish product sold to Ocean Alliance, a Gloucester, Mass.-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting ocean sustainability through research and education.
“While a penny a pound may not seem like a lot, last year AGAR moved over 8 million pounds of seafood, so there is a real potential to make an impact on the organization,” said David Greenwood, public relations representative for AGAR.
Nautifish donations will go toward Ocean Alliance’s general operating fund, with the goal of refurbishing their headquarters, a Gloucester ship painting factory built in 1863.
The Nautifish fresh seafood line includes Prince Edward Island mussels, Atlantic sea scallops, clam meat, cod, haddock and Atlantic pollock. The frozen seafood line includes king crab, lobster meat, sea and bay scallops, value-added seafood items and gourmet stuffed clams. All Nautifish seafood is sustainably harvested and all products and marketing materials are made with recyclable or reusable packaging and sustainable materials.
“It was a goal from Day 1 was to have a charitable and sustainable component to this new brand,” said Karen Bressler, president and CEO of AGAR. “Ocean Alliance is an organization that has proven to us to be not only a driving force in educating the public about our ocean resources, but one that works very well with the Nautifish brand. It was important to the brand to have an organization that was a true advocate for these sustainability issues and one that could also guide us in moving the brand in the proper direction.”
