Chinese seafood firms are queuing up to join MSC programs, according to the organization’s representative in mainland China.
A list of firms who are “very enthusiastic” for MSC certification for domestic sales includes Sheng Yan (also known as Chang International, which operates the Ocean Gala brand) and Qingdao-based seafood trading firm Bei Yang Jia Mei, according to MSC’s Beijing representative An Yan, speaking to local media this month.
She also listed Ningbo Lan Xue Co., which operates the Blue Snow brand, and Hai Yang Xiong Di, which trades under the Oceanese brand. Qingdao-based Spring Foods, which operates the Ai Chi Yu brand of packaged seafood aimed at Chinese convenience-oriented consumers, was also named by Yan.
The only Chinese firm to secure MSC certification for its production in China is Zoneco/Zhangzidao, a major producer of shellfish that also runs processing and trading wings. However, numerous Chinese contract processors have secured MSC handling certification to satisfy international clients.
