On Wednesday, the fisheries chiefs for the European Union and the United States will meet in Brussels to talk about fight against illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing and other fisheries management issue.
Last September, the two sides signed an agreement to work together to end IUU fishing. It’s estimated that fishermen lose out on up to USD 23 billion a year to IUU fishing.
During next week’s European Parliament hearing, Maria Damanaki, the EU’s commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries, and Dr. Jane Lubchenco, U.S. under-secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere, will further the discussion on cooperate on battling IUU fishing. They will also talk about EU-U.S. cooperation to promote sustainable fisheries management among regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) and other international forums as well as Damanaki’s efforts to reform the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy.
