The European Commission has adopted what it calls a new “Action Plan” for revitalizing the marine environment and the maritime economy for the Atlantic Ocean area.
The plan, which follows a strategy the commission adopted back in 2011, is designed to encourage EU member states to create sustainable maritime economic growth while still protecting the environment.
The plan calls for a number of new initiatives, including carrying out new research into improving aquaculture, developing new instruments and platforms for ocean observation and monitoring, and upgrading infrastructure on land to make Atlantic ports more productive.
Already, many EU Atlantic member states, including the U.K., Spain and France, have been implementing similar plans, but the new measure is urging those member states to work together toward this goal.
“The Atlantic plays an important role in Europe's history and identity,” said Maria Damanaki, European commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries. “Our Maritime Strategy for the Atlantic will explore its immense potential for the future sustainable development of Europe.”
With its adoption by the commission, the Action Plan now goes to the European Parliament and the Council for endorsement.
