Fifth French fishery now MSC certified

The North East Arctic cod and haddock fishery has achieved Marine Stewardship Council certification, making it the fifth French fishery to earn the distinction.

Already certified for North Sea saithe, the Boulogne fleet Euronor and the Compagnie des Peches Saint-Malo collectively served as the client for the fishery, supported by From Nord, their producers’ organization. From Nord holds the entire French quota for cod and haddock in the North East Arctic Ocean and shares it between Euronor and Compagnie des Peches Saint-Malo. Three of Euronor’s freezing trawlers and Compagnie des Peches Saint-Malo’s trawler operate in the fishery.

The cod and haddock fishery was certified by MacAlister Elliott and Partners Ltd.

“With this MSC certification, we are opting to position ourselves on a market that is strategic today. Whereas our first certification (or saithe) was first of all a bet on the future with the aim of enhancing the image of our fishery and attracting new sailors, this second certification responds to a market reality in which we want to have a part,” said Euronor CEO Xavier Leduc.
