First Texas grocery chain MSC certified

United Supermarkets has become the first Texas regional grocery chain to obtain the Marine Stewardship Council’s chain-of-custody certification (CoC).

Fresh fish products bearing the MSC eco-label are now available at 14 company locations, including Market Street and United Supermarket stores in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Amarillo and Lubbock.

The Lubbock, Texas-based retailer operates grocery stores in 30 markets across north and west Texas.

To obtain CoC, wholesalers and distributors must pass an independent, third-party audit and undergo annual surveillance audits to demonstrate they continue to meet the standard. The CoC standard focuses on maintaining an internal traceability system and reliable operational systems in place to ensure that MSC-certified seafood is kept separate from non-certified seafood. Worldwide, more than 1,800 companies have obtained CoC.
