Greenpeace to Protest Korean Tuna Fishing Practice

Greenpeace this week announced plans to protest against Korean tuna fishing practices from Dec. 8 to 12, coinciding with the annual meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.

According to Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Lagi Toribau, the protest will occur on a Greenpeace patrol ship and involve protestors in tuna costumes holding banners reading "Korea Stop Tuna Overfishing" and reciting similar slogans in both English and Korean.

Toribau says tuna extinction is inevitable, unless governments work together to boost tuna population. He adds that Korean awareness of the problem is very low, despite the fact that they’re large seafood consumers. Toribau hopes the protest will raise public awareness of tuna overfishing.

Greenpeace is calling on the commission to push to reduce catches of bigeye and yellowfin tuna by half.

Also, Greenpeace requested that the commission create marine reserves to conserve tuna populations and crack down on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) tuna fishing, which is estimated at $11 billion annually.
