In brief: Klamath salmon restoration plan set

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday approved California’s water quality improvement plan for restoring salmon fisheries in the Klamath River.

The plan calls for pollution reductions of 57 percent for phosphorus, 32 percent for nitrogen and 16 percent for carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand. It also calls for annual reductions in the river’s reservoirs of more than 120,000 pounds of nitrogen and 22,000 pounds of phosphorus.

“The Klamath particularly is a troubled river system, and once supported the third largest salmon run in the nation. [The plan] will go a long way toward helping restore those key salmon runs, and the jobs those salmon once supported,” said Glen Spain of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations.

Prince Charles to address Seafood Summit

Seafood Choices Alliance on Tuesday announced that the Prince of Wales will speak at the 2011 Seafood Summit via a previously recorded message.

Prince Charles’ message will be played at the Seafood Summit’s close on 2 February. Late last year, Seafood Choices named Patagonia co-founder Yvon Chouinard as the keynote speaker and Dr. Ray Hilnorn and Hal Hamilton as additional speakers.

The Seafood Summit will take place 31 January to 2 February in Vancouver, Canada.
