Chilean salmon-farming firm Multi X has launched a new sustainability strategy called “the ABCs of Sustainability.”

According to the firm, each letter represents a pillar of the strategy and groups together specific initiatives and metrics to be followed to achieve proper sustainability.

The letter “A” represents animal welfare, representing Multi X’s goals of ensuring the optimal condition of its farmed salmon. This pillar brings together its associated health and production goals, including reducing antibiotic use, achieving zero lethal interactions with marine mammals surrounding its operations, and improving fish survival rates.

The letter “B” stands for biosphere, representing Multi X’s objectives for its operations to coexist harmoniously with the ecosystem around them. This pillar includes all emissions standards, controls on environmental impact, raw materials, circularity, and environmental performance. In this category, goals include having no fish escapes – which the company has already achieved for more than a decade – reducing its carbon footprint with energy efficiency projects throughout its value chain, and ensuring none of its waste goes to landfills. As part of the latter goal, during 2024, Multi X achieved 100 percent of its zero waste goals in its processing plants and 96 percent across its entire value chain.

The letter “C” represents communities, in which Multi X will promote collaboration to drive sustainable development for all those living in the southern regions of Chile, where the vast majority of the country’s salmon farming takes place. This will include strengthening its open-door policy, which in 2024 included 160 visits to its facilities, and bolstering initiatives such as the Project Bank, which sponsored 23 projects in 12 locations across southern Chile last year. Multi X said it will also continue developing micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises as suppliers to the industry.

“At Multi X, we understand that aquaculture is part of the solution to feed the future and that we have the challenge of showing and communicating the sustainability of our sector, with pillars and actions that are easy to understand,” Multi X Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager Francisco Lobos said. “This new strategy allows us to communicate in a simple way with our stakeholders, share the way we work, and periodically report on our objectives, progress, and goals related to our operational priorities.”

Multi X reported record Q1 2025 revenue of USD 222 million (EUR 195 million), which was up 33.7 percent year over year. Its net profits also reached USD 5.2 million (EUR 4.6 million) in the period. That came on the heels of a difficult 2024, in which the company posted USD 3.6 million (EUR 3.2 million) in net losses.
