Pub group Fuller’s joins the Sustainable Seafood Coalition

Fuller’s has joined the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC), becoming its first new member since the launch of its sourcing and labeling codes in September last year.

The London brewer and pub company, which was founded in 1845 and has almost 400 pubs, hotels and inns in England, will join the other SSC members and align with the codes by 18 September.

“Provenance of food is extremely important to Fuller’s. We will use the SSC codes to help educate our staff and future chefs in our training programs,” said Paul Dickinson, head of food at Fuller’s.

The SSC’s vision is that all fish and seafood sold in the United Kingdom is from sustainable sources. Its membership accounts for more than 70 percent of the country’s seafood retail sales.

Signing up to its sourcing code requires that members commit to the responsible sourcing of all own-brand fish by following good practice, such as good traceability, transparency and openness. The code includes commitment to taking a risk assessment approach to sourcing fish, and basing decisions on the outcomes to help the fishery or farm to move towards sustainability.

The SSC’s labeling code is designed to create harmonized seafood labeling that will provide consumers with accurate information on the provenance and sustainability of the fish or seafood.

Members that have already signed up to the codes include Marks & Spencer, Birds Eye UK, Young’s Seafood Limited and Direct Seafoods.
