A sustainable fishing non-government organization has announced its support of a recent recommendation for Marine Stewarship Council (MSC) certification for the Russian Sea of Okhotsk pollock fishery.
“Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) would like to congratulate the Pollock Catchers Association, the Russian Pollock Sustainability Alliance and everyone involved in ensuring the sustainability of the Russian pollock fishery,” said Jim Cannon, SFP’s CEO. “We are hopeful that final certification will come shortly, and look forward to working with the PCA and all stakeholders to implement the Action Plan for the Sea of Okhotsk fishery and progress assessments and improvements in the Western Bering Sea and Navarinsky pollock fisheries.”
The statement follows a recent announcement by Moody Marine, a third-party assessor, that the fishery has satisfied the requirements for MSC certification. Moody Marine noted that the fishery has not received MSC certification yet. Right now, there is a 15-day working period for those who wish to protest in writing, according to the grounds for objection listed on MSC’s website.
