6 deadly seafood viruses and diseases to watch out for

Initially identified as the reason behind outbreaks in Atlantic salmon being reared in cages in Norway, Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) has since found its way across Western Europe, Canada and Chile. Fish afflicted with ISA usually exhibit pale gills and may swim to the surface to attain oxygen. For the most part, infected fish maintain a normal appetite and then suddenly die without displaying any concrete symptoms. Post-mortem examinations of ISA fish mortalities show corrupted circulatory systems, as well as swollen livers and spleens. ISA has been known to affect sea-run brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss) alongside salmon species.

Recently, major fish farmer SalMar reported that ISA was identified at two of the company's sites outside Frøya in Norway (http://www.seafoodsource.com/news/supply-trade/salmar-replaces-ceo-reports-good-results-despite-isa-detection). AquaChile also found traces of the virus in one of its farms in the Aysen region of southern Chile in April of this year: http://www.seafoodsource.com/news/aquaculture/chilean-salmon-farm-reports-suspected-isa-case
