Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A.-based seafood supplier Bornstein Seafoods is recalling 44,550 pounds of shrimp because it has the potential to be contaminated with listeria.

The company said it detected Listeria monocytogenes during its routine sampling program in an in-process shrimp sample in a food production environment, Bornstein said. As a result, the company ceased distribution of the product as it “continues our root cause investigation as to what caused the problem.”

The Bornstein Seafoods branded Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat was distributed to distributors and retailers in the U.S. states of California, Oregon, Washington, along with British Columbia, Canada. Additionally, the shrimp may have been further distributed and sold at retailers nationwide, according to Bornstein.

The shrimp was packaged in both 1-pound and 5-pound plastic bags.

No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
