Pollock added to Commodity Processing Program

With the help of Good Harbor Fillet, the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday announced that it has added pollock to its Commodity Processing Program.

In partnership with Duane Williams and Martin O’Connor, members of the USDA’s agricultural marketing branch, and U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass.), Good Harbor pushed for the inclusion of pollock to allow schools to purchase the fish at an affordable price.

Using NutraPure, its proprietary cooking process, the Gloucester, Mass., company can offer schools breaded fish sticks, nuggets and portions in whole grain with low sodium and up to 30 percent less fat than competing products.

“The obesity epidemic in this country is a real problem. It has always been our desire to help kids eat better and foster the next generation of seafood lovers by offering schools the perfect combination of great taste and better nutrition at a price they can afford,” said Bill Stride, Good Fillet president and CEO. “We are proud that we can do our part to help kids make healthier choices.”

Under the Commodity Processing Program, states and recipient agencies can contract with commercial food processors to convert raw bulk USDA commodities into more convenient, ready-to-use end products.
