Handy International on Wednesday launched a formal DNA testing program for crabmeat, soft crabs, oysters and artisanal fish.
The Salisbury, Md., company selected a qualified lab that has seafood experience. Its DNA testing symbol will soon appear on its packaging.
“Although we have many internal procedures in place to avoid any species substitutions, we wanted to take this additional step to provide further assurance,” said Terry Conway, president of Handy. “With our overall company focus on transparency, we felt it important to add this program and to include all of our seafood.”
