Aeon expands MSC-certified offerings

Japanese retailer Aeon on Friday announced that it will roll out a range of 17 new Marine Stewardship Council-certified seafood products under the Topvalu private label.

The new products include salted mackerel and salmon roe products from Alaska. The roll out includes all 1,200 of the retail giant’s stores including Jusco, MaxValu, Aeon super centers and other stores throughout the country.

“We welcome the expansion of MSC labeled products by Aeon and their continued commitment and effort to support bio-diversity conservation,” said Kozo Ishii, MSC Japan program director. “The increased range of MSC certified products in such an important retailer will significantly improve the awareness of the MSC eco-label with Japanese consumers and provide them opportunity to recognize and reward fisheries that have demonstrated their sustainability against the world’s most rigorous, science based standard. I would like to thank Aeon for their commitment to the MSC program and for their on-going support.”

Japan’s second largest retailer, Aeon first offered MSC certified products in November 2009, with 10 products at 660 stores.
