Aldi UK’s Salmon Wellington takes gold

Northern Catch® Select Large Salmon Wellington with a Cheese & Dill Sauce from Aldi UK captured the gold at the British Frozen Food Federation’s (BFFF) 25th annual Retail Product of the Year awards.

In addition to winning the grand prize, the product won the best new fish-based product category. There are a total of eight categories, including best new poultry-based product and the best new meat-based product.

Large Salmon Wellington with a Cheese & Dill Sauce is made with Atlantic salmon and is wrapped in a puff pastry, weighing 700 grams, easily serving a family of four. The product retails at GBP 3.99 and offers “fabulous value for consumers wanting luxury at an affordable price,” said Brian Young, BFFF director-general.

“Aldi have created a real humdinger of a product,” said Young. “It is no surprise with the inventive and innovative products that we are seeing from the likes of Aldi, the leading retailer brands, Birds Eye and Young’s that the fish category is in such a healthy state.”

The BFFF pointed to Kantar Worldpanel data that said, for the 12-month period through 18 March, the frozen retail market is up 6.1 percent year-over-year in value terms, while the fish market grew 4.1 percent in value. The fish sector is now worth more than GBP 750 million, according to the BFFF. 

The awards ceremony took place on Friday at the London Hilton on Park Lane Hotel.
