Athens, Greece-headquartered aquaculture company Avramar announced that a number of its fish have been recognized by the Brussels, Belgium-based International Taste Institute (ITI).
“This recognition is a confirmation of our vision: to be the trusted leader in Greek and Spanish Sea Bass and Sea Bream - a champion of superior quality, innovation, and sustainability, from egg to plate,” said Avramar Group CCO Reinout Verhelst.
The ITI invites companies to submit their products, for a fee, to a panel of 200 independent judges to be blind tested. This service allows producers to receive expert tasting reports that they can then use for product evaluation or marketing. Products that receive over seventy percentage points in the blind tasting are awarded a Superior Taste Award.
The evaluation is based on the expert panelists’ perception of five criteria: the product’s first impression, appearance, aroma, taste, and texture.
Avramar’s sea bream and Greek-origin sea bass were both awarded prestigious 3 star ratings by the ITI, the highest possible distinction. The firm’s pagrus major earned a 2 star rating at the Awards.
The firm was formed in 2020 through a merger of a number of other seafood and fish feed producers, including Andromeda Group. By 2023, the company reportedly had EUR 450 million (USD 489 million) in outstanding loans, at which point its major creditors began looking for a buyer. In January 2025, the CEO of Dubai-based aquaculture company Aqua Bridge Holding, Mohammad Tabish, announced that his company had acquired Avramar on LinkedIn.
