BJ’s Wholesale Club is beginning to promote its sustainable seafood sourcing policy, featuring it on its website and in a multi-page spread in the latest edition of BJ’s Journal, which showcases the U.S. East Coast club store’s merchandise and service.
“Our goal is to continue to provide safe, quality seafood at an excellent value for years to come without compromise. We recognize that as a large volume buyer of seafood products, we are in a unique position to help protect our oceans and waterways and the seafood it provides us,” said BJ’s on its website.
To accomplish this, BJ’s is working with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to evaluate its seafood products and suppliers against “the newest science and best industry practices to engage in constant improvement.”
BJ’s is also seeking out and offering products from fisheries certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and from farms certified according to the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices.
The membership-only club-store chain has also pledged to by 2014 no longer sell any seafood species that does not meet its sustainable seafood criteria.
Based in Westborough, Mass., BJ’s is the United States’ third-largest club-store chain, with more than 150 stores on the U.S. East Coast and as far west as Ohio.
