‘Boston Antarctic Shrimp Intestine’ a hit for Chinese cannery

In an amusing case of mislabeling in China’s seafood market, a company in Dalian is selling “Boston Antarctic Shrimp Intestine” as a packaged snack offering.

Dalian San Yu Stainless Steel Equipment Co., a cannery, is marketing the heat-treated snacks in supermarkets and convenience stores across northern China.

The company also offers 160-gram cans of “South Pole Fish and Shrimp Luncheon Meat.”

Chinese seafood firms have come to use the terms “Antarctic” and “South Pole” as marketing tools signifying purity. “Boston,” meanwhile, has similarly become a marketing tool in the crustacean sector, liberally applied to lobsters to suggest quality.

Heat-treated packaged meat snacks are a staple of China’s savory snack market and can be found in supermarkets, small stores, and railway stations across the country.
