Captain D’s acquires 65-restaurant chain

Captain D’s is acquiring Grandy’s Country Cookin’, a 65-restaurant homestyle and comfort food chain based in Dallas. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Phil Greifeld, president and CEO of the fast-casual seafood chain, which is based in Nashville, Tenn., and operates and franchises 527 restaurants in 25 U.S. states and at military bases worldwide, made the announcement on Monday.

“Our heightened execution throughout 2011 has enabled us to significantly invest in the future of our D’s business,” he said. “Our company-wide operating diligence during the past year has also provided us with the financial flexibility to purchase the Grandy’s chain.”

Grandy’s was owned by SSI Holding Group Corp., which also owns to the Souper Salad salad buffet chain. The Lewisville, Texas-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September.

Grandy’s will be operated as a separate subsidiary of Captain D’s, and the the executive team will remain in place. Greifeld will assume the role of CEO of Grandy’s while continuing in his position as CEO of Captain D’s.

Though Captain D’s is known for its seafood, Grandy’s offers a mix of proteins. Its specialties include hand-battered fried chicken and country fried steaks and “Sinnamon” rolls, but it also menus catfish and shrimp. The chain serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Captain D’s is owned by Sun Capital Partners, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based private investment firm, which purchased it last year.
